Pearl Is One of Three Amazing June Birthstones

Give a pearl birthstone gift to June babies with an Add-A-Pearl gift.

The balmy and bright summer month of June is one of only two months (December is the other) with three birthstones: pearl, alexandrite, and moonstone. People with June birthdays can choose from multiple gems to celebrate their special day. At Add-A-Pearl, we're obviously partial to pearls, but we also enjoy learning about other birthstone alternatives and the origins behind their birthstone traditions.

Birthstones have symbolic qualities, with each gem holding a different meaning that's believed to ring true to the person born in the month corresponding with it. Not only do birthstones make great birthday gifts, but they can also serve as symbolic talismans, reminding the wearer of how much she has accomplished and how much she's grown over time. Continue reading our blog post to learn more about June’s fascinating and beautiful gemstones.

Pearl

Affiliated with elegance and class, the pearl is the traditional birthstone for the month of June. Found from a shelled mollusk, pearls are the only gemstones created by living creatures. These rare gemstones are beautiful in the way they organically form, and they don’t require any polishing to reveal their natural luster. Whether natural or cultured, pearls have always had an attractive allure.

Due to its beauty and unique qualities, the word “pearl” is often used to describe anything that is rare and valuable. Pearls come in a multitude of different sizes, shapes, and colors like white, pink, blue, and black. White is the most common pearl color, signifying wisdom, purity, and new beginnings. Visit this page to learn more about the symbolic meaning of pearl colors.

Regardless of a person’s birth month, pearls are loved by many and make the most wonderful gift for all kinds of special occasions. Just like the people who wear them, each pearl is different. Celebrate a June birthday or any magical moment by starting an Add-A-Pearl necklace. The reasons for starting an Add-A-Pearl necklace are endless, inspiring, and always filled with love and meaning.

Even our customers know there’s no better way to celebrate a special occasion than with Add-A-Pearl. Jan is one such customer who enjoys expressing her love to her three granddaughters by gifting them Add-A-Pearl pearls to wear on special occasions. She specifically started an Add-A-Pearl necklace as a birthstone present to celebrate one of her granddaughter’s June birthdays. We love how Add-A-Pearl has become a gift-giving tradition to honor Jan's special granddaughters!

Moonstone

The moonstone is another beautiful gem that celebrates those born in June. This gemstone has been associated with both Roman and Greek lunar deities, and it's also often associated with love and good luck, bringing fortune to the wearer.

In ancient times, some people believed that the stone was created from moonbeams, hence the name "moonstone". In the presence of light and when it moves, the stone has a glowing sheen. Moonstones are typically cut in a smooth cabochon shape to enhance the glistening effect that the stone produces.

Just like pearls, moonstones occur in a wide range of colors. The most popular moonstone colors are rainbow, blue, and pink. The most desirable moonstones have a more transparent body color and blue sheen.

Alexandrite

Alexandrite is a less traditional birthstone for June, due to its rarity. The gemstone was discovered in Russian emerald mines, and its name honors Czar Alexander II of Russia. Alexandrite is considered a positive omen and has been thought to bring luck, good fortune, and love.

Alexandrite is an extremely rare variety of the mineral chrysoberyl. It is an exceptionally rare gemstone that is more valuable than most gemstones, even more so than rubies and diamonds. The gem can be described as “emerald by day, ruby by night”, due to its unique color shift. The stone reflects different colors depending on its setting. During daylight, the stone presents with a blueish green hue. Under incandescent light, the stone appears purplish red. Due to its color-changing properties, the stone is often associated with balance.

June’s three stunning gemstones are beautiful in their own unique ways, yet they all bring love and positivity to the wearer. Classic and timeless, pearls continue to be one of the most popular jewels today. The versatility of pearls make it the perfect gem for anyone, not just for those with June birthdays. You simply can’t go wrong with pearls!

Given their symbolic meaning and captivating beauty, pearls are highly coveted, making them the best of the three gemstones, at least in our opinion. Our custom pearl necklaces also make the perfect June birthday gift, since you can continue adding to them every year with a new pearl.
